[TV Daily Reporter Han Seoyul] Korean music rights organizations are taking steps to establish a new copyright framework suitable for the AI era. The 'K-Music Rights Organizations Collaboration Committee,' involving the Korean Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) and six other music rights groups, has officially announced the initiation of joint projects to protect music rights in AI environments.
Since its launch in February this year, the committee has identified five core projects, which include ▲implementation of AI-generated music identification programs ▲establishment of a unified K-Music code database ▲research on copyright law revisions for AI ▲studies on adjustments to AI and broadcasting collection regulations.
To assess the use of AI technology effectively, the organizations plan to introduce identification programs and consolidate music rights data to enhance accuracy in settlements by the end of this year. KOMCA will contribute more than half of the total project budget, taking on a significant role.

The protection of music copyrights is continuously evolving in the digital landscape. As discussions about the impact of AI on the music industry gain momentum, the committee's announcement underscores the importance of rights protection across the industry. The approach of integrating technology to tackle copyright issues for AI-generated music will serve as a positive signal for creators.
KOMCA's significant financial commitment reflects their sense of responsibility. This suggests a determination to elevate the voices of rights holders within the Korean music ecosystem, and it is anticipated that future studies will contribute to the development of AI copyright laws. Collaboration with other rights organizations will pave the way for healthier growth in the music industry.
As creators grapple with the advancements in AI, joint initiatives like this are vital for establishing effective rights protection. The goals set by the committee are not just projects, but essential efforts needed to foster an environment where creators are recognized and compensated justly.
