Seoul Jazz Festival Announces Cancellation of Starbucks Booth
The Seoul Jazz Festival has canceled its planned Starbucks booth.
This decision seems influenced by Starbucks' recent marketing controversy.
There is an increased need for corporate events to consider historical context.

[TVDaily Reporter Kim Ji-ha] The Seoul Jazz Festival has officially announced the cancellation of its planned Starbucks booth for the upcoming event. On May 20th, the festival's official social media channels reported that the Starbucks booth for '18th Seoul Jazz Festival 2026' will not be operated. The festival, which is among the foremost jazz and popular music celebrations in Korea, will take place from May 22 to 24 at Olympic Park in Songpa-gu, Seoul.

While the organizers did not specify the exact reasons for this decision, it is widely believed that recent controversies surrounding Starbucks have influenced this outcome. The uproar began when Starbucks launched a promotion named 'Tank Day' coinciding with the May 18th Gwangju Uprising memorial, which drew public ire due to its historical implications.

In response to the backlash, Shinsegae Group Chairman Jeong Yong-jin has issued an official apology and dismissed the CEO of Starbucks Korea. The issue has since gained international attention, with the U.S. headquarters also extending an apology.

The decision to cancel the Starbucks booth at the Seoul Jazz Festival goes beyond mere marketing controversy. It can be seen as a significant step in building trust with consumers in an era that emphasizes corporate social responsibility. In a time when responsiveness to social issues heavily impacts corporate image, Starbucks faces a risk of substantial damage to its brand.

The 'Tank Day' incident involving Starbucks holds a complex social context. The timing of the promotion coinciding with the May 18th Gwangju Uprising is viewed as a lack of respect for a historical event. This poses a risk that could lead to a loss of consumer trust, going beyond simple controversy.

Lastly, the decision taken by the Seoul Jazz Festival organizers highlights the importance of recognizing the historical context in marketing events. Future festivals and large-scale events will need to consider the social messages conveyed by corporations, ensuring they're sensitive to the backgrounds they represent.
